A change is as good as a holiday! And the new Mountain Lodge (previously Trails Lodge) offers a new and improved getaway experience.
On 1 June 2018, MORE unveiled this enhanced mountainside retreat in its Marataba South Africa Concession of the Marakele National Park. The concept of the converted Mountain Lodge puts renewable solar energy at its core to lighten its footprint, while improving the guest experience.
Marataba basks in sunshine for over 300 days a year, and while the animals and guests seek out the shade of trees and pool umbrellas, the lodge’s solar panels are positioned to take it all in. An additional 24 panels upgraded its existing solar-power project from a 6.5kW to 14kW plant, another electricity inverter was added, and longer-lifespan lithium-ion storage batteries replaced lead-acid alternatives. This renovated setup allows Mountain Lodge to sustainably generate and store sufficient solar energy to power its five Eco Suites and main guest areas, taking it completely off the grid.
Set secluded within the Waterberg and surrounded by the wildlife-rich plains of the Marakele, the lodge has always taken its cue from the earth. The renewed hideaway is constructed to incorporate both design and operational elements that merge it with its natural surrounds. And it’s not just the environment that catches a break; guests will also notice the benefits. The impressive solar-power plant has further allowed for the updating of each Eco Suite with amenities, like a maxibar, Nespresso machine, hairdryer, Wi-Fi phone, Wi-Fi, and USB charging points, making for a more comfortable stay.
So much so that guests may wish never to leave. Just as well they can do some game viewing from the comfort of their suites’ newly pergola-shaded decks. If guests do wish to get out and explore, they can hop on a safari vehicle (given a leg-up by the new carport’s steps) and head out on morning and afternoon game drives. Alternatively, guests who enjoy hiking can still follow the Marataba Trails, which originally defined the lodge’s offering, getting them that much closer to nature. Bush walks are an easier-going option, but also put guests in the thick of things. Just wanting to take it easy? Guests can cruise into the sunset on a Miss Mara Water Safari along the Matlabas River.
The mountains are calling… and the new Mountain Lodge is the reason you must go!
Accommodation rates include full board, twice-daily game drives, a Miss Mara Water Safari, other standard activities, and transfers between Matla Mamba Airstrip and the lodge.
